NHIF portal: which website for what

NHIF portal Tanzania: Self Service login, registration, eCard and the other NHIF websites

Short answerChecked 31 October 2026
The official NHIF portal for members in Tanzania is NHIF Self Service at selfservice.nhif.or.tz. There you register (Register, then Member Account), log in with your username and password, verify your NIDA number, add dependants, and see your eCard, your contributions and the accredited facilities. The verification portal (verification.nhif.or.tz, Uhakiki) is for hospitals and pharmacies, not for members. NHIF's own website is nhif.or.tz; help is free on 199.

The NHIF websites and what each one does

NHIF's website lists its two online services under Huduma Zetu: Usajili (registration), which opens NHIF Self Service, and Uhakiki (verification), which opens the verification portal (NHIF, seen 31 October 2026).

Create your NHIF Self Service account

From NHIF's own guide to registering on Self Service (NHIF flyer, read 31 October 2026):

  1. Open selfservice.nhif.or.tz and press Register (Jisajili).
  2. Choose the account type Member Account.
  3. Choose your member group: employee, councillor, student, retiree, dependant or packages (vifurushi, for individuals and families).
  4. Fill in a username and password — or your membership number if you are an employee, councillor, student or retiree already registered — and your mobile number. The password must be longer than eight characters, with capital letters and a symbol such as @#!$&.
  5. Confirm and submit.
  6. Enter the one-time code (OTP) sent to your phone and submit: your user account is created.

If your employer or institution registered you, NHIF sends your membership number by SMS (NHIF flyer). Joining Ngorongoro Afya or Serengeti Afya does not require a visit to an NHIF office: it is done on Self Service (NHIF FAQ). Documents for a spouse and children, and the employer, student and Toto Afya routes: NHIF registration.

NHIF Self Service login, step by step

  1. Open selfservice.nhif.or.tz and press Log In (Ingia).
  2. Enter your username and password and press Log In.
  3. The first time, enter your National ID (NIDA) number and verify it by answering two questions correctly.
  4. Enter your details — phone number, marital status, region, district and ward — and press Submit.

What you can do once logged in

NHIF lists these Self Service services (NHIF flyer):

  • Register yourself and your dependants — a spouse and children; the rules and documents are on NHIF registration.
  • See the services used by you and your dependants.
  • Get your eCard (kadi ya kielektroniki). NHIF no longer prints physical cards for the packages: adults aged 18+ use their NIDA number, and each beneficiary gets an identification number as a soft copy (NHIF FAQ).
  • See your contributions and payments. Every contribution is paid straight into NHIF's account with a control number (NHIF FAQ).
  • Find the accredited facilities — also searchable without an account on NHIF's facility list by region, district and ward.
  • Approvals (vibali) and feedback on the services NHIF provides.

Bima ya Afya kwa Wote: same portal

NHIF's page on universal health insurance (Bima ya Afya kwa Wote) sends people who want to register to selfservice.nhif.or.tz/register (NHIF). The first phase started on 26 January 2026 with poor households whose cover the Government pays (NHIF, 23 January 2026). What the law says, in English: Universal Health Insurance Act; in Kiswahili: Sheria ya Bima ya Afya kwa Wote.

When the portal does not work for you

  • Hospital says your membership is inactive: usually the 30-day waiting period (90 days for Toto Afya individual), an expired package or unpaid contributions — see NHIF verification.
  • The NHIF app: NHIF's website still shows a notice "Pakua NHIF APP" dated 17 January 2025, but the Google Play listing it links to returned "Not Found" when we checked on 31 October 2026 (NHIF). Use the website portal.
  • Someone offers to register you or sell a package by WhatsApp: NHIF has warned about a fake Toto Afya offer in the name of a private company, with a WhatsApp number (NHIF). Pay only with the control number NHIF generates.
  • You prefer to go in person: NHIF lists its regional offices on its website; its head office is at 2 Barabara ya Ukaguzi, Dodoma.
  • Questions: free line 199 or 0800 787800, info@nhif.or.tz (NHIF; NHIF).
Checking a car or motorcycle insurance is a different portal, run by the insurance regulator: TIRAMIS check.
