NHIF package price calculator

Tarangire to Tanzanite, Toto Afya, Umoja Afya

Short answerChecked 28 October 2026
NHIF prices a package by who is covered and their age: an adult aged 18–35 pays TZS 168,000 a year on Tarangire, 432,000 on Ngorongoro, 480,000 on Mikumi, 792,000 on Serengeti and 2,712,000 on Tanzanite; a couple aged 18–35 with two children pays TZS 563,760 on Tarangire. A child alone can join Toto Afya for TZS 150,000, informal groups of 10+ pay TZS 60,000 per member (Umoja Afya), and public employees pay 3% of salary, matched by 3% from the employer. You pay NHIF once a year with a control number; cover starts after 30 days.

How the calculator works

The figures come straight from NHIF's contribution table (table 4 of the packages flyer, August 2025): one yearly price per household type — one adult or a couple, with zero to four children — and per age band (18–35, 36–59, 60 and over). The calculator looks up your row and shows the same household on all five packages so you can see what moving up a package costs.

  • Dependants: a spouse and up to four children (born, adopted or step-children) under 21. The table stops at four children.
  • Families with a member aged 60 or over and children are not in the published table: NHIF's self-service portal or the free line 199 gives that price.
  • Family discount: NHIF gives up to 10% off dependants' contributions for families; the family rows of the table are NHIF's own final prices.
  • Payment: one lump sum with a control number (bank or mobile money). The "÷ 12" column only helps you budget — NHIF does not take monthly payments for packages.

Worked example

Amina (34) and her husband (35) want cover for their two children. Their row is couple + two children, 18–35:

PackageYearly price (TZS)Where they are treated
Tarangire563,760Dispensaries up to regional referral hospitals
Ngorongoro1,252,80010,000+ facilities up to national hospitals, by referral
Mikumi1,783,680Same network, more tests (172) and medicines (419)
Serengeti2,692,800Same network, 301 tests, 770 medicines
Tanzanite8,252,640Same network plus private ward and the widest lists

If they insured only the children, two Toto Afya cards would cost 2 × 150,000 = TZS 300,000 a year, with a 90-day waiting period instead of 30.

Limits of this calculator

It reproduces NHIF's published prices as checked on 28 October 2026; NHIF can change them, and the amount on your control number is the one you pay. It does not tell you whether a given hospital accepts your package: use NHIF's facility search. Benefits by package are compared in our NHIF packages guide; private cover is explained in health insurance in Tanzania and, kwa Kiswahili, bima ya afya.
